What If Public Schools Did Feed Children Healthy Meals?

A story in the news recently detailed a pending change to federal law that would require public schools to offer children healthy meals opposed to the low-grade food that has been provided for years. What if schools did provide healthy meals to kids? What if schools took the initiative without needing to pass a law?Exactly how children would be impacted by better meals has been the subject of several studies and the results are quite compelling.

Imagine that all you are a student and all you have been offered to date are unhealthy foods. How would your life change?

* Overall Better Nutrition And Energy - Energy and nutrition are very closely linked. Better nutrition also boosts immune system function which in turn means that kids spend more time at school and less time home sick. Meals that are higher in fiber will help kids keep illnesses at bay and also contribute to feeling healthier and more energy.
* Boost In Brain Power - Healthy meals will contribute to better focus and mental stamina. Higher focus means more concentrated learning and the ability to better process information and stamina. Meals high in sugars and fats are known to increase behavioral problems and concentration issues. That means less disruption in the classroom for other students who are trying to pay attention.
* A Decrease In Child Obesity - Physical education plays its part in fighting childhood obesity, but sometimes exercise is not enough. Exercise and healthy eating combined are a powerful combination that are assets that, once learned, children can take with them the rest of their lives. They can also take things like healthy eating with them back home and pass this knowledge on to their parents.

What was amazing to me, after hearing the news story about the potential passage of a healthy lunch bill, was that a law is needed for something that seems like a no brainer. The list of benefits of children eating healthy meals is quite extensive, and yet every day the quality of food that is pumped into future generations is detestable. Taking a lunch to school has been the only way for parents to ensure that their children are eating properly. If this bill passes, I think the ripple effect would be monumental. Better meals, higher scores and grades, happier kids with brighter futures. This just seems like the right thing to do, so for the kids' sake, I hope this law passes.
